Mind or body? What is more important?

Is there any connection between our mind and our body? Does the condition of our mind affect the condition of our body health? Or is it the condition of our body health affects the condition our mind?

In today’s world, it is quite understood and well bought concept that health; fitness should be the topmost priority of each and everybody. We see many friends, relatives doing so. It means they proactively give time to fitness practices. And in such examples, we have always seen many drop outs and many fail to achieve their health, fitness goals? Despite of doing heavy workouts and even following diet, they seem to fail! What could be the reason?

In this article let’s try to decipher this unsolved public mystery. My understanding on this is that they lack the very important aspect of leading a well-deserved happy life. This aspect is mind-body connection.

Lets understand the very basic of human life. This is the thumb rule, which we must learn and teach our next generations also. The rule is –

Our mind and body is interconnected.

Whether we learn this principle or not,  this principle have been playing a vital role in each of us life. And it is going to be the same throughout our life. It is up to us become aware of our mind-body connections and to develop a loving and harmonious relationship between the two.

In a very famous book named  “The Anatomy of the Spirit,” the author Caroline Myss described this process as “biography becoming biology”:

As our lives unfold, biological health becomes a living, breathing biographical statement … Every thought you have … has activated a physiological response … [Thoughts] produce biological responses that are stored in our cellular memory … woven into our biological systems …

It clearly means that our thoughts and emotions not only decide but impact and make our health conditions as we are.

A French philosopher once made a very powerful statement. “I think, therefore I am”. Our mind is the reason of our existence. So it’s up to us how we are going utilize, use this basic principle of life in leading a fit and hit and healthy life.

One thing we have understood now, that mind plays important role in our physical health.

Let’s see the other side of the coin.

The way our mind determines our physical health conditions, is there any factor which can determine the health condition of our mind?

Yes there are two main factors, which determine how mental, emotional health is going to be!

  1. What you eat?
  2. How physically active you are?

But we are taught that these two things are mainly related with physical health. Isn’t it?

Yes, it is! However, that is not the only thing these two factors do. They largely affect the way we think. They affect our mental and emotional health in great extent. In fact, these are the only factors, which determine our mind conditioning. So have you got my point till now? Haven’t you yet?

Okay, let me tell you.

How our mind is going to be depends on how we are physically. If physically you are inactive, your mind also would exhibit the same pattern.  If you are overweight, dull, unenthusiastic your mind would also show the same pattern in your thinking.

And if your mind is active, your body is also going to be active. These two are two sides of the same coin. None of them is complete if other is not functioning well. It’s a cycle. It’s like pedals of bicycle. You must make sure that, you impart power to both the pedals but not at the same time. One pedal while being pushed down, the other one would come up and it goes on and on and on. Right?

This means that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. In other words, our minds can affect how healthy our bodies are!

On the other hand, what we do with our physical body (what we eat, how much we exercise, even our posture) can impact our mental state (again positively or negatively). This results in a complex interrelationship between our minds and bodies.

Collectively, this can be termed as lifestyle. And that is exactly I help my customers with.
