We have a very proven set of traditions in our great nation. One of these traditions is to fast. And there are numerous occasions and opportunities our culture has offered for us fast. It’s another story that people have adapted to incorrect ways to fast and this incorrect way of fasting is still going on. And because of this only, we never get true benefits of fasting.

Let us learn what fasting means and how we can get benefited from it.

According to our tradition, fasting is basically an agreement or resolve or a firm decision of any individual, to be without physical needs and focus all attention to SADHANA. Means for us Indians, fasting used to a VRATA. And it has become just a ritual without the essence in it.

Modern day fitness or health cautious people have understood the scientific method of fasting, and to our surprise, this modern method resemble our age old tradition, which we have forgotten. We do it only for the sake of doing it, without even understanding the health and spiritual benefits, it offers.

 

So let me put it again in simple term. Fasting is a choice of surviving without physical needs which includes food, leisure, sex etc. Anything that deviates us from SADHANA is to be avoided.

Fasting is not only part of SADHANA or worship however, it’s a great tool for self-discipline. People who are dreamers and wish to achieve great things in life must use fasting as an effective and proven tool. We have access to food anytime and anywhere. And because of this, we have forgotten the real experience of feeling hungry.
